Sigtryggur Bjarni Baldvinsson
Sigtryggur Bjarni Baldvinsson was born in Akureyri in 1966. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in Akureyri, the Iceland University of the Arts, and completed postgraduate studies at the École des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg, France. In his paintings, photographs, and watercolor works, Sigtryggur explores defined natural phenomena. Water surfaces have been a guiding theme in his works, portraying streams and sea surfaces that reflect the main elements of creation: light, air, earth, and the unique forces of nature, such as wind and gravity. Sigtryggur has also attempted to elucidate and emphasize the structure or arrangement of objects in the world, including images of flower beds and the foliage of trees. Questions about the narrative of modern man in an untamed nature and man's responsibility towards it mark the artist's work with increasing weight. Sigtryggur's works have been exhibited in solo and group shows at major museums in Iceland. His solo exhibitions have reached the number of forty. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Iceland, Reykjavik Art Museum, University of Iceland Art Museum, Akureyri Art Museum, Reykjanesbær Art Museum, the Supreme Court of Iceland, Landspítali National University Hospital, Gerðarsafn, and various companies and private collectors. Sigtryggur has taught at the Iceland University of the Arts, the School of Visual Arts in Reykjavik, the School of Visual Arts in Kopavogur, and the School of Visual Arts in Akureyri. He served on the acquisition committee of the National Gallery of Iceland for four years.
