Jóna Hlíf Halldórsdóttir
Jóna Hlíf (b. 1978) graduated with an MA in Art Education from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2013 and an MA degree from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland in 2007.
In 2022, Brim Hvít Sýn was published, focusing on Jóna Hlíf’s art—installations and text-based works created over the past two decades. The book was edited by literary scholar Auður Aðalsteinsdóttir, with design and layout by Júlía Runólfsdóttir. It received a silver award from the Icelandic Graphic Design Association (FÍT) for its cover and overall design.
Text works, material experiments, and installations form the core of Jóna Hlíf’s artistic practice. She approaches text as texture: a way to express thought, to present and create community, or as a foundation for ideas. Her works often explore notions of essence, time, and the image of history.
Jóna Hlíf’s works have been widely exhibited in museums and galleries both in Iceland and abroad. Notable solo exhibitions include shows at the Reykjavík Art Museum, Akureyri Art Museum, and Berg Contemporary. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the National Gallery of Iceland, the Árnesinga Art Museum, Kuckei + Kuckei, and the Living Art Museum.
Throughout her career, Jóna Hlíf has received numerous grants, and her works are included in public collections.
