Jón B. K. Ransu

Jón B. K. Ransu is a visual artist educated in the Netherlands from 1990 to 1995, including a semester as an exchange student at NCAD (National College of Art and Design) in Dublin. In 2006, he participated in the ISCP (International Studio and Curatorial Program) in New York, receiving a grant from The Krasner Pollock Foundation. Ransu’s paintings are typically based on a re-evaluation of artworks or art movements, focusing on how we perceive and process information about colors and forms. In the fifth volume of Icelandic Art History, published in 2011, it is noted: "Ransu has conducted various experiments related to, among other things, appropriation art and the perception of the viewer. […] While appropriation is involved, the artist is never hesitant to reinterpret the referenced material in his own creative process by altering content, form, or context, increasingly adopting a neo-modernist approach, particularly in the realm of op art, where he combines forms and colors to create perceptual distortions for the audience" (Gunnar Kvaran, Icelandic Art History: From the Late 19th Century to the Early 21st Century. New Painting, Performances, and Installations, Forlagið and the National Gallery of Iceland, 2011, p. 85). Ransu is also an author of academic books and has made notable contributions to contemporary art discourse in books and journals. He worked as an art critic for Morgunblaðið from 2002 to 2010. He has authored three books on visual art: The Value of Contemporary Art: A Handbook on Contemporary Art in Iceland (2012), The Painting That Escaped the Frame (2014), and Pure Horror: Form and Formlessness in Contemporary Art (2019). Additionally, he co-authored the books Valtýr Pétursson, published by the National Gallery of Iceland in 2016, and Gerður: Master of Metal and Glass, published by the Gerðarsafn Art Museum in Kópavogur in 2010. Since 2005, Ransu has taken on various curatorial projects, organizing exhibitions for institutions such as the National Gallery of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum, and the Living Art Museum. He was one of the curators for Momentum 9: Alienation in Moss, Norway, in 2017. The Momentum Biennial is one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in the Nordic region. In addition to his artistic career, Ransu is trained in pedagogy and was a part-time lecturer at the Iceland University of the Arts from 2002 to 2016, teaching both practical and theoretical courses at the BA and MA levels. He is currently the Head of the Painting Department at the Reykjavík School of Visual Art.
