Sigtryggur Bjarni Baldvinsson was born in Akureyri in 1966. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Akureyri, the Icelandic School of Fine Arts and Crafts, and graduated from the École des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg, France. In paintings, photographs and watercolors, Sigtryggur has described specific natural phenomena. Water surfaces have been a leading theme in his work, stream water and sea surfaces that reflect the other main creatures, light, air and earth and the unique forces of nature such as wind and gravity. Sigtryggur has also tried to explain and highlight the structure or arrangement of the parts of the world, among other things with pictures of flower slopes and ornamental trees. Questions about the modern man’s message in untouched nature and man’s responsibility towards it, now mark the artist’s work with increasing weight. Sigtryggur’s works have been shown in solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the main museums in Iceland. His works are owned by the National Gallery of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum, the University of Iceland Art Museum, the Akureyri Art Museum, the Reykjanesbær Art Museum, the Supreme Court of Iceland, Landspítalinn and Gerðarsafn and various companies and private parties. Sigtryggur has taught at the Iceland University of the Arts, the Reykjavík Academy of Fine Arts, the Kópavogur Academy of Fine Arts and the Akureyri Academy of Fine Arts. Sigtryggur sat on the museum council of the National Gallery of Iceland for four years.
